Video or Film! What do you think ?

Do you Recall the TV ad on Memorex raving about a making of audio tape and challenging us to guess whether it was live or tape? Some people go to the movie house and, well they question whether the are looking at something taken with film or was it done with video. Not unlike days past when they had arguments on whether film was better than digital photography. Now there is just no contest. good-bye film.

I have noticed that when I am watching a show I automatically tend to look down on video verses film. ( In my head I’m sure). Why is that? When I grew up and video became available, I was fascinated with it, however I new I was watching the death of an industry (FILM). On the one hand it meant that anybody could now make movies. On the other, they all looked very dissimilar than what was still coming out of Hollywood – they looked cheap. Over the days, video technology has improved dramatically from the old VHS camcorders with their low resolution and low dynamic scope. Today, even the most economical HD camcorders are capable of producing great images. There’s still something subconscious that makes many people prefer the look of film. Just think though you can actually go to Best Buy and purchase a Flip Cam or a Zi8 by Kodak and with a little video editing software and create a beautiful movie.

Differences Between Film and Video

When we look at something and think “it was shot on video” what is it that we’re noticing? The differences between film and video used to be a lot greater – specifically in terms of the much greater dynamic range and resolution that film could capture. Over the past few years these have largely gone away and, in many ways, digital may actually be superior to film. What remains, though, is that most consumer camcorders have a very small CCD compared to the 35mm sensor which might have as much as seven times the surface area . This has a very real impact on the depth of field, dynamic range, and the camera’s low light sensitivity. Give it time and that will change also. We are in the age of digital so enjoy it and go create some video. The world will love you for it and who knows you may actually catch your 15 minutes of fame.
